Survival in the Amazon with Javier Espíritu [Boating - treking - fishing - fruit gathering - hunting] 17 days
Few people would argue that evolution gave humans opposable thumbs solely to excel in the modern 9 to 5 office routine. During this one-in-a-life-time experience, our specialized indigenous guides will show you the real purpose of those precious thumbs (we assure you they were not intended for keyboard spacebars or car steering wheels).
Among the survival techniques you will learn from our expret guide Javier Espiritu, are fire making (even in the humid jungle), camp building with local materials, orientation in the woods (day and night), traditional fishing, wild fruit and root gathering, canoe building and other important ancient skills that will take you back in time to the neolithic for a while.
Among the survival techniques you will learn from our expert guide Javier Espiritu, are:
Fire making (no easy task in the always humid jungle)
Camp building with available jungle materials*
Orientation in the jungle (day and night)
Traditional hunting and fishing methods
Wild fruit, plant, and root gathering (nutritional and medicinal applications)
Canoe building and piloting
And countless other ancient survival skills that will transport you back to the Neolithic period
* All camp environs will comply with our minimal environmental impact philosphy]
We begin our adventure in the exotic town of Iquitos Perú where we take a boat down river to the city of Tabatinga in Brazil. This is not your typical river cruise, but rather an epic 8-hour journey full of the most scenic views the mighty Amazon can offer. We rendezvous with our guides at the Loreto Yaku river and spend the night at Amacayaku National Park. The next day smaller boats take us deep into the jungle, approximately 6 hours up the Loreto Yaku river, to a previously undisclosed location, selected by our indigenes guides. You can never step in the same river twice, said the adage. The Amazon demonstrates this every minute of every day so our exact area of operation will be chosen in accordance with the ever-changing conditions. There, we will spend the next 12 days learning and practicing how to survive in the rugged Amazon river basin.
We then head down river to Tabatinga where we spend a well-deserved night at the Anaconda Hotel and celebrate with plenty of food (caught, cooked, and cleaned by someone else for a change!) and drink. The following day well have time to discover the streets and markets of Tabatinga and Leticia, pick out arts and crafts by indian artists, and prepare for the trip back to Iquitos the following day. Alternately, we can arrange for you to fly direct from Leticia back to Bogotá saving long the return trip to Iquitos. Contact us for details.

Frequently asked questions about our trips
We categorize our survival journeys as rigorous, although that will be very subjective. For some people rigorous means lack of hot water or baked bread in the morning, for us it means rigorous. We will be in the jungle, sleeping in hammocks with mosquito nets, under the trees with shelter built by ourselves and procuring our own food from wild sources. We always carry a well thought out plan, but once we are in the jungle those plans are very 'flexible', to say the least, and depend mostly on what the amazon has prepared for us. We do not discourage anybody from taking this specialized course, but caution those who will feel discomfort is not part of any travel plan. You have to judge carefully for yourself before going on our survival trips. However, we provide less rigorous trips and even comfortable tours for those who want to appreciate nature close but not that close. See our information on other trips. The following are some frequently asked questions about our trips and some important tips and requirements you should follow carefully to ensure you can be part this very interesting and fulfilling experience.

What is the yearly schedule? |
We do not schedule more than 4 trips a year since planning this type of adventure requires careful study of the conditions of the Amazon River. Each trip is different than the next because of the water level of the river. During the winter months (winter meaning just WET, not cold) the level of the river is several meters above summer levels. This means that the jungle will be mostly inundated (an astonishing spectacle, you will always remember navigating under huge trees on small canoes) and we will have to look further for a dry place up a tributary to set up camp. On the other hand during the dry months the Amazon is a totally different experience. The abundance of land animals is higher and rain will not be as frequent (still, it is the rain forest and rain will always fall heavily) For this reason we take travelers depending on what they want during 4 different periods: Feb-March (wet) May-June (wet) Sep-Oct (dry) Dic-Jan (dry). Write to us for further details. |

what about safety? |
Our main concern has been and will always be safety. Even though we touch 3 countries in this trip we have the best safety net conditions allow. Our travel is as safe as we cam make it, and on the unlikely even of an accident we have one of the best safety nets in the region. It is important for you to know that we always carry enough snake antidote vials for everybody in the group, including guides... even for the most poisonous species.
The political situation of Perú and Brazil is stable and has been like that for several years. Colombia on the other hand, has some problems, which we always watch carefully on a daily basis. However, the part of Colombia we visit is on the southern tip of the country about 1,000 miles from the last road. There has not been an incident with guerrillas so far in that part of the country (ever), one of the most guarded ports on the Amazon River (the 3 countries have considerable military presence there).

Is insurance provided? |
We automatically provide insurance coverage for medical expenses and evacuation for each of our clients. Insurance for trip cancellation or interruption and baggage damage are optional. |
Patience, we are in the tropics |
As any seasoned traveler knows, time moves slower in the tropics. For the few days we spend near civilization, you will have some time to burn while we deal with last minute permits, or arrange back up transportation. So we ask for your patience, fortunately our time in towns is usually very brief. |
Who are the expedition leaders? |
Our leaders and guides are carefully selected among local experts. They are able to prevent and solve logistical and medical problems in the field. They also speak several indigenous dialects and are experienced to deal with government and business practices in the countries we visit. They also have an ability to relate with our clients and have massive amounts of knowledge of the places we visit (see staff). |
Do you have age and health restrictions? |
We do not have an aged-based cutoff. It is important however to know that the survival experience can be hard physically. If you have a medical condition we will appreciate you telling us before hand so we can accommodate or honestly tell you not to join us in this particular trip. Remember, we will be surviving in the jungle for 12 days in a very remote place. |
Do I have to be in good fitness? |
Although we have to trek sometimes to move from one place to another the distances are usually short, nevertheless it will be hot and humid. Our rule of thumb is that anyone who has no problem with a day hike can handle our treks. Good mental attitude however is the most important consideration. It is important that you know how to swim, since we will spend most of our time near and around water. |
What type of vaccination do I need? |
It is of the utmost importance that you get Yellow Fever and Hepatitis-B shoots, all 3 countries do require such vaccination before you go the Amazon region. We recommend also getting Tetanus shoots. Check with you doctor for any additional vaccinations you may personally need. |
